Koen,
I’d say as of about a month ago, getting you up in the morning and getting you up from naps has looked a bit different. Your mom and I will be laying there and hear the “uh-uh-uh-uh” noise that compliments the excessive bouncing you do to psych yourself up for the day. We’ll check the monitor and confirm that yes, in fact, you’re up and ready to make some moves. I’ll head up toward your room. Here’s how it usually goes from there…
{turns on bedroom light}
Me: “Good morning, Koen!”
You: silently takes inventory of your surroundings with the lights on. Koko? Check. Stuffed animals all accounted for? Check. No one else accompanying me (if there is a Reagan, you’ll usually hit him with a “no Reagan” or “stop talking, Reagan.”)
Me: “You ready to get up, Koen?”
You: “Do talking Mickey”
Me: “I don’t want to do talking Mickey, Koen. Can we get up?”
You: “Do talking Mickey!”
Me: “Koen, I don’t want to do…..ugh. Hi ‘ya Pal! Huh huh! Say, do you want to go to my clubhouse?!?”
We’ll riff for a few on that, but then I’ll get antsy and we’ll agree that Mickey needs to take a nap. That’s when the acrobatics start. Now, by the time you read this, the term “parkour” might not mean a whole lot. But I think the best way I can describe it is to just steer you toward this scene from a show that might not mean a whole lot to you called “The Office.”
So you used to let me just lift you out of your crib and we’d start our day, but now, “my do it.” So you’ll grab the front of your crib and throw a foot on the side rail of your crib. You’ll then basically be lying between the side rail and front rain on your bed. You’d then shift your weight to the front of the bed and slowly lower your feet down the vertical slats until they’re standing on your mattress. You’ll then step down and stick the landing. Parkour!
From there, you’ll “MY DO IT!” your shorts off and I’ll help with the diaper. With just a shirt on, you’ll Donald Duck it out to the hallway where you’ll hit whoever is within eye-sight with a “guh’mornin’” and then waddle-trot into the bathroom where you’ll “my do it” pee in the little toddler toilet and “my do it” your teeth.

We’ll get dressed, and head down to say good morning to your mom, and eventually get downstairs for cheerios and shows while I make breakfast. I think this is one of those things that I’m going to miss when you get older and are able to actually do it yourself. I think the “my do it” stage of things can be a little frustrating, but I also think this is just something all kids do in one way or another.
But I have to say, I love the parkour dismount routine that you have going on. We’re going to Disney in a few weeks, and once we get back, the plan is going to be to move you to your new room and your big-boy bed. So I know these days are numbered. But I’m excited for you to grow into that next stage and to see what kind of fun we’ll get into once you’re in your new room.
But until then, I love you so much!
Love,
Dad
